Summary[]
As Shirayuki continues to gain unwanted attention due to Raji's statement of her being engaged to Zen, Obi is tasked with being her personal guard. After hearing an off handed comment by Obi, Zen and Mitsuhide's past is revealed and Zen learned the danger of letting someone get too close.
Plot[]
As the rain clears up, Shirayuki says she will harvest several herbs and informs Ryuu that she has completed the forms regarding Fort Lockstow. In his office, Zen is still troubled by the situation that Shirayuki is in thanks to Raji's speculation that she is Zen's fiancée. Obi arrives over the balcony and is chastised by Zen for taking a longer leave then he was permitted. Apologizing, Obi playfully asks if he missed anything exciting. He learns that many people have come to believe that Raji was truthful in Zen and Shirayuki being engaged which has led to Shirayuki gaining unwanted attention and being flattered over to earn favor with Zen.
Hoping to keep her safe, Zen orders Obi to be Shirayuki's body guard until further notice. Obi is unsure if this is a good idea since he had been the one trying to scare her off when she first arrived at the castle. Zen decides it's up to Shirayuki if she wishes to keep Obi close by and forgive him but still believes this is the best option, adding that he doesn't hold it against Obi for what happened and is relieved that he returned to the castle at all since he thought Obi would take the chance to leave and not return; earning Zen's trust.
At a greenhouse, Shirayuki is about to start helping Ryuu harvest when Kiki arrives with Obi and informs her that Obi will be guarding her until the rumors settle but she is free to send Obi away if she wants. After Kiki departs, Obi decides to help Shirayuki harvest and has a momentary lapse in concentration that causes him to fling off her face cover. Later, he helps Shirayuki take some jars to a storage and asks if she ever wished Zen weren't a prince or if she were of a higher status. Appearing angered, Shirayuki asks Obi to watch what he says as she could have seen his question as an insult. Unknown to the two, Mitsuhide and Zen heard the entire conversation. In the medical office, Garak insists that Shirayuki and Obi try some of the fermented roka fruit. Both try but Ryuu points out that the drink they tried is actually alcohol and not medicine. While Obi enjoyed the drink, Shirayuki becomes intoxicated and collapses.
In Zen's office, Zen and Mitsuhide are shown to be affected by having heard Obi ask Shirayuki if she ever wished Zen weren't a prince or if she was a higher status. They recall a moment several years earlier when Zen and Mitsuhide first met. Their relationship was shown to be tense as Zen felt he did not need an attendant but Mitsuhide remained at his side under orders from Izana. Zen was able to determine that Mitsuhide wanted to be working for Izana as he had high respect for him. During Mitsuhide's brief moment of doubt, Zen was able to escape the castle and meet with a friend, Atri. Their playful interaction is cut short when Mitsuhide is able to find Zen and the two return to the castle. As they head back, Mitsuhide asks if Atri is Zen's friend. Zen replies that Atri isn't as he is not allowed to have friends and makes it clear that he also does not see Mitsuhide as a friend. When Mitsuhide requests Zen not speak to him in a hurtful manner, Zen is surprised that he hurt Mitsuhide and apologizes.
At a later time, Atri informs Zen that Mitsuhide appears to be the top talk amongst the soldiers. Handing Atri a sandwich, Zen admits that he finds Mitsuhide strange since he's so straight forward. Something that he is not use to and makes Mitsuhide different from other guards he knows. Correctly guessing that Mitsuhide's skills as a swordsman has caused him to beat Zen so many times, Zen is surprised that Atri is able to read and speak to him so well; another thing he is not use to. As they enjoy their meal, Zen confesses that he is the most joyful when he is spending time with Atri. Atri then informs Zen that he has been changed to the night shift and asks Zen if he would still be able to sneak out to see him. Zen assures Atri that it will be no problem and that he can continue to sneak out to see him.
Unknown to the two, Mitsuhide has been observing them but leaves the two. As he walks away, Mitsuhide recalls how Atri is rumored to have arrived at the castle roughly four months prior and appears to be around the same age as Zen. He guesses they meet in secret since their social status differs from one another and that Atri is said to have moved to Clarines from a distant area. Mitsuhide still finds something off about Atri and decides to look into the matter further. His concentration is disturbed when Zen appears. The younger prince confesses that he is aware he shouldn't be friends with commoners but admits he struggles with knowing how close to let others get to him.
Later, Mitsuhide is speaking with Izana about Atri and the potential threat he could cause. Izana is pleased with Mitsuhide's work and insight but both soon become alarmed when they remember that Atri has been recently switched to the night shift. Later that night, Zen sneaks out of the castle. After he finds a wounded Atri, Zen is suddenly ambushed by a group of men. Atri is revealed to know the men and that they were the ones who wounded him since they did not want to risk Atri's emotions getting in the way of their plan.
Mitsuhide appears and the lead man demands that Mitsuhide bring Izana out least Zen's safety be in jeopardy. Izana appears on his own and intimidates the man into revealing their cause. It's revealed the men are the remaining members of the Lito family that Izana removed from power when Lord Lito exploited money to earn Izana's favor. Izana finds their revenge attempt futile which angers the men. Atri is given the order to kill Zen as the fight begins.
As Izana and Mitsuhide easily defeat the men, Zen demands to know why Atri went along with the scheme. Atri admits that he was jealous of wealth, sustenance, and luxury that Zen was born into while his own family became destitute. Hearing that Atri despises Zen for feeling he took everything in life for granted and did nothing to earn what he had, Zen unsheathes his sword. Zen says that he saw Atri as his friend and will always remember him as such. Just as Atri unleashes his arrow, Mitsuhide is able to stop it and strikes Atri. Zen hurries to Atri's side and apologizes for the outcome. Atri states that Zen shouldn't be sorry and that he should learn to not allow himself to be read so easily. He adds that Zen shouldn't let the situation get to him before wondering how things would have turned out had Zen not been born a prince. Atri passes away in Zen's arms.
